After 6+ months on a low-fat, liquid protein diet my cholesterol numbers dropped from 223 to 201 with corresponding changes in HDL, LDL and triglycerides. After 5 months on Paleo my cholesterol numbers rose from 201 to 225 with corresponding changes in HDL, LDL and triglycerides. When I see my cardiologist on Monday I expect to be chided and encourage to take statins, to which I am overly sensitive, e.g. severe & crippling muscle pain and weakness. I don’t view statins as an option, so what shall I do instead? Background: my grandmother died of a massive heart attach @ age 51. My mother had quad bypass surgery two years ago due to four clogged arteries. Obviously, my goal is to avoid their fates. Please help. Thanks!

Did you see Chris Kresser’s presentation in cholesterol? It had a lot of good info. Or try his resources here: http://chriskresser.com/heartdisease

    • Jay

I second Biana on watching Chris Kresser’s presentation.  One of the many things he points out is that your TC can vary by 17 points in either direction on a day to day basis with no changes whatsoever (thats a 34 point swing!), which could alone account for your different readings.  You know how its standard to have multiple BP readings then take the average to determine if one is truly hypertensive?  Well the same applies to  TC.  There is much more in the presentation to look at, but that was one of the biggies to me.  Good luck!

Great Job Dr. Cate!  As a spine surgeon myself who sees the ravages of this disease daily, we need to get the message out to our colleagues about how to treat osteoporosis correctly!   Here is my own Osteoporosis Rx that I use daily to keep people from my operating room table.

So wonderful that you don’t see everything as a nail!

  • http://www.plantoeatpaleo.com/ Joanna

Great presentation.  Really helped me understand how the Paleo diet helps with all these diseases.

  • Bendriver44

I wonder what form of calcium is Cate talking about? There are several forms available as a supplement. Some are absorbed very well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cate-Shanahan/741452310 Cate Shanahan

Hi Bendriver44! Good point, some pill forms are absorbed better but none that I’ve seen so far are absorbed with anything even close to the efficiency of calcium in foods. But the REAL issue is that even when calcium is absorbed, it is not utilized properly by the body and research shows that arteries become calcified and even scarier, heart attack rates rise!

  • Joanne

Outstanding presentation Dr. Kate! I really appreciate you validating my intuitive sense that diet and lifestyle is the first line of defense for good health. I’ve always been a bit of a sceptic when it came to pills and supplements. We are working on improving our knowledge of traditional cooking methods and food handling, so it looks like we are on the right track.

  • http://www.primalbreakfastclub.com/ Julie

I think this is my favorite presentation so far. I have resisted my own doctor’s recommendation to take a calcium supplement because I had read about the risk to arteries. Now that I know there’s no real benefit, I feel better about not taking the risk. Thanks, Sean and Dr. Cate.

  • Helena

Sean, is there any way, we can purchase presentations separately?  67$ is a very good deal, but a lot for me now. There is really only one talk I want to own. Thanks for any help.

  • Ali

Up here in Boston, for me to maintain my Vitamin D level to ~50ng/ml, I need to take 10,000 IU per day.  Anyone else taking this much?  I’ve been full-on Paleo for 1 year.  Weekly, I eat at least 1/2 pound of grass fed liver and bone broth. In the summer I get out in the midday sun for 15 mins+ per day, but this doesn’t seem to be enough to raise my D enough. I do high intensity weight lifting (HIT) . I  supplement magnesium and K2 (and a bit of PQQ), but don’t supplement calcium or anything else.  So, any other Paleos needing a big dose of Vit D to maintain a decent level?

    • Renni_G

I take a “raw” version of Vitamin D. I was retested in 24 days and was in range. I cannot be exposed to the sun at all due to skin cancer issues. GIve it a try. I bought it at Vitamin Shoppe.

  • M. King

All the summit presentations are great but this one, in my opinion, was the best so far!   Thank you for putting this all together Sean!  Your hard work is much appreciated!

  • Sylvia

    Great input! Thanks so much.

  • Of Goats and Greens

Cate, this has been one of the best presentations so far.  I’m going to be ordering your book ASAP.  I appreciate the delving into health issues with the scientific probe.

Excellent discussion Sean.  Loved her books and now I think this is my favorite of the paleo summit.

  • http://twitter.com/starlightlife Gina

Bravo! Bravo! Dr Cate you ROCK! Sean you too :) I love that whole food for health and for treating disease is coming to the forefront. Yes Cate I’m with you this is not alternative! Nuff said just love you both!

  • Renni_G

It is after 1am, but I was anxious to hear a webinar dealing with paleo diet and osteoporosis. Dr. Cate is a master in her field. She presented her material well and kept my attention the entire webinar. Thank you Sean for presenting an issue affecting many women over 40. I, however, met a woman who was only 21 years old with osteoporosis; the woman told me she got it from being on birth control pills. As far as the diet connection with children’s behavior, there seems to be a resistence among the education system to tackle this issue. It is not necessarily the educators but the parents of the students who don’t want to change the diet of their children for many reasons, ie cultural, or they are so overworked and resort to fast food or instant/frozen foods.

  • Torie

    Awesome!  Basically…no other words :)

  • Darren

    Brilliant…. really got me thinking

  • http://www.siboinfo.com/ Dr Siebecker

Phenomenal information.  Thank you so much.

  • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Really awesome presentation. I’ve never heard of Aaron before until now and he seems to really know his stuff and has a keen interest in sustainability. I’m looking to learn more about this and this has definitely given me an overview of some things.

    Thanks!

  • Sara .

Sweet! Definitely an inspiring talk, and excellent explanations behind the benefits of running an ecologically-minded food system. Thanks!

  • Molly

LOVED this talk.  Thanks Aaron and thanks Sean!  Amazing perspective and essential information for transforming our world.

  • MikeMoskos

Wow; I’m glad I watched this one. Finally, someone is talking about Alan Savory’s ideas (savory institute.com). I think Aaron explains Savory’s ideas better than Savory himself does.

  • Treatlisa

Me too!  Enjoyed this one a lot…
