i recommend bigger fonts next time. the info is very interesting, and a bit difficult to follow

did you pop out the presentation to full screen?  it was plenty big enough for me that way. hth

    Room 3 totally fascinating!

What Pottinger’s work tells us is that the epigenetic expression caused by environmental pressures can transmit to the offspring, but also that the environment can express genes. It puts the terms familial and inherited in a different light than we’re used to. It explains partly why we see articles about 7-year olds who develop diabetes type 2 today. But let’s not fall into the trap of believing that the entire reason kids develop NIDDM today is that their parents transmitted their epigenetic expression. Instead, we must consider that both their parents’ epigenetic expression and the current environmental pressures are involved.

From a treatment standpoint, since epigenetic expression transmits from one generation to the next, we must consider the effect of treatment not only on those kids, but also on their parents and those kids future kids. Thus, we must affect the environment in such a way that it alters the current epigenetic expression of three generations. Otherwise we’ll end up right back where we started whereby we have parents without NIDDM who have kids with NIDDIM.

But why treat the parents if they don’t have NIDDIM? Because parents are probably the main agent of these environmental pressures acting on those kids, though probably unwittingly and most certainly unwillingly. Furthermore, there’s the idea that environmental pressures can amplify the epigenetic expression they induced in the next generation, if they also continue to act with the same strength on that generation. But obviously to me, the most probable culprit – diet – is worse now for that kid than it was for his parents.

The question that remains is how far back must we go to find the environmental pressure level that will do just that. I’d say at least as far back as two generations before the parents. But that’s just how I see it.

is anyone else getting stuck at around 44:00:00 .. this is the 2nd time its happened?

  • Feste31979

Wow- this is fantastic! This is my favoritie interview so far!

First presentation of series that was difficult to follow due to the oscillating sound quality. I spent a good part of the presentation closing my eyes so I could try to pick up what was being said. I could hear Shawn fine but Gray’s voice trailed off as though he was moving away from the mic. What I was able to hear was good but I know I missed quite a bit. This is the first comment that I have made but the rest of the seminar has been fabulous and I am so excited for each new topic. I hope there is clear sound quality for the remainder of the sessions. Very interesting. My career was in health care and I must say out of all the seminars that I have attended this has been the best. Usually you had to pick a session. I would not have wanted to miss any of these and you made that possible. Thanks for your hard work in accumulating such an interesting group of informed speakers.

I agree. My sound guy spent a lot of time making this one sound as good as he could. Sorry!

I recently found a highly touted application for normalizing the audio levels in podcasts.  Nothing like it was available, so this group created their own and graciously makes it available at no cost.  I read about it on a blog; they said it is the gold standard for polishing podcasts for that professional broadcast touch.  It might be worth checking out:http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator

Phylis, I use headphones. It helps a lot.

Love hearing all the studies, should order the book so I can digest this slower!

Most information packed lecture so far (measured by my notetaking ;-)   Dr. Graham did a meticulous job of leading me from definitions/histories of genetics & epigenitics and then I lost connection through the part covering “other studies”…some of which, I imagine had complex findings that there was not time to understand?!  From the time “methyl donors” were introduced, the information was way above my head. So, while I appreciate the conclusion Dr. Graham made about that “bad things/genes can be switched”; was it necessary to list the 5 mechanisms that can/may do the switching? (especially since only 2 were briefly defined) I got bogged down. And leaving me so aware of all the epigenetic effects in my life without concrete suggestions for how to deal with them was a bit thoughtless. This science is so cutting edge, I imagine I will not be able to “take the information to the next step” myself. I’ve just be told the “timebomb is ticking” and the best I can do is take one step back! I bummed.

I feel your hand cramp pain Joy! I took a TON of
notes on Gray’s presentation as well.

In terms of “action steps” I think that the underlying tone and
message was to JERF – to focus on incorporating nutrient-dense,
micronutrient-rich foods (the examples with methylation factor, microRNAS,
etc.) and an ideal omega-3 to omega-6 ratio (ie eat more cold-water fish,
grassfed beef – less or NO industrial seed oils) and to avoid or completely
eliminate processed foods (ex. he provided – HFCS, TFA) as well as eliminating
environmental offenders such as BPA and other toxins (herbicides, pesticides,
      etc.)

The empowering part of the message is that we have the ability to NOT become
ticking timebombs by taking control over our lifestyle and environment; by
eating whole, real foods and incorporating healthy habits such as exercise,
stress management, etc. into our lives. In doing so, we can positively
influence out epigenetics – that we are not the product of our “genetic
destiny” but instead more active players in our personal outcomes and
      those of our families.

      Here’s to health!

Thanks, The FitRx! I appreciate your positive feedback and attitude the most. I get the message for the whole summit is JERF with all its most obvious protocols…whole foods, well sourced foods, and chemical avoidance…Still, I did have a visceral reaction to the Pottenger study result of 4 generations needed to return to normal and healthy. And the Swedish study of slow growth nutrition confused me a bit, too. Maybe I was taking too many notes, Rx ;-)   Still…the supportive tone of your reply goes a long way! Thanks, again.

  • Kellyinabnit

WOW! Amazing information. Thank you sooo much!

This was fascinating. Best presentation of the entire summit. Thanks for bringing Gray to my attention – he has a lot to offer, and I’m absolutely going to get his book. Really, really good information.

Thank you Grey, learned sooo much!

Great lecture. Great websites: ppnf.org and westonaprice.org. My trusted sources for several years.

Awesome presentation. A lot of information! Mark Sisson always likes talking about turning genes on and off so it was nice to watch an entire presentation on this very subject of epigentics.

  • Genelle Harvey

I was toying with the idea of becoming an integrative health counselor… but I really like the NTP program you have put together. Great info! It made me miss formal learning :)

  • Anita

This is one of the most interesting health talks I have ever heard!  Epigenetics is fascinating… and a little scary!  I had no idea genes could be affected so much by diet and chemicals. It makes me wish I knew about the Paleo diet while I was pregnant.

  • Leslie Young

Does anyone else think the future people depicted in Wall-E were really what’s going to happen? So many people are completely unaware what they put in their body effects their and their future generations well being.

  • Barbara

    Question for Gray for Q&A:

First of all thank you for such a wonderful presentation.
I am using BPA free Nalgene bottle when backpacking. It is light
which is convenient when backpacking. Would it be OK to use it just for backpacking?
I do not see any other alternatives.

    Thank you for your input.

    • Gray

Barbara, I think if you use BPA free and it’s only for camping you should be fine. As with any type of plastic though don’t let it ge over heated. You could also consider stainless steel. For everyday use I recommend glass. That’s what I use but I would agree its too heavy for backpacking.

  • Deborah7

It’s hard to hear all these talks when you live in Australia! I have missed a few because of the time difference. Any chance of keeping them on for a little while longer?

AMAZING presentation. Wish the audio was better, but wow. All the presentations have been so incredible and enlightening, but this one was, for me, the best. At once depressing as hell, but also hopeful knowing we have the power to change things for ourselves and future generations. Sean, you doing what you do helps spread the word far and wide, so thank you, again, for this summit and everything you do to help bring health to everyone. :)
