    This sounds like one of the most useful presentations.  Hearing about cravings and problems with processed foods gets boring, as if the only trap is cake and pizza and chips and whatever else.  How about more information for people who don’t eat doughnuts and candybars, yet struggle with real food, or what some consider to be real food?  For example, dried fruits or an overconsumption of dairy?

      Thanks, you’ve hit a nail on the head with diary and dried fruits.  There are many people who would have better digestion, skin and brainpower if they removed diary.  And dried fruits are easily abused on a real food diet.  I’ve dealt with both issues in the past and can say that as I’ve healed my gut I can now better tolerate high-quality dairy that a few years ago would give me awful sinus problems.

      Steve made some great points and I’ll add too that we’ve seen a lot of people struggle with over consumption of nuts as well… that tends to be a trap to fall into.  I’m so glad you brought that up because it can cause awful digestive problems even though it’s a pillar of a real food diet.

    Hi Sean, Thanks for all your brilliant collection of speakers & presentations. I am really learning a lot. Yesterday (day 8) I had computer problems & when I got back going again, the viewing period had expired. Is there any way that I could view these presentations? I would be eternally grateful. Dissapointed that I missed them as I was religiously following the presentations each day. I am very tight with money at the moment as I am unemployed at this time & just after losing my youngest son to leukemia. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks for this. I have been doing SCD for 8 months and found that eggs, dairy, honey, dried fruit and high sugar fruit don’t agree with me that well, so have left them out for now. I will probably try them again later when my gut has healed more. So far, I haven’t noticed a problem with nuts, but then I have never eaten them whole (only as nut butter, nut flour or nut yoghurt) and I always soak them first. Nuts can attract mould quite easily, as can dried fruit, so an intolerance to those could indicate a yeast problem.

    I am now going to search for the Bristol Stool chart!

      That’s awesome you’re tweaking and customizing your diet.  That’s the most important step to feeling better.  If you end up feeling stuck, you might try removing the nut products for 4 days just to see if that’s holding you back, but as you heal you will most likely be able to slowly introduce more of those foods.  It could take months, could take years, but hang in there, you’re doing awesome!

    Just for clarification do the 4 huntsmen apply to constipation as well or just lose stools. I already have lots of fat and fermented foods in my diet but usually go 4-5 days in between bms followed by a day or two of lose stools.

    Thanks so much to Steve and Jordan- you guys have helped me to almost completely heal from my autoimmune complications specifically related to my gut (when you coached some of us through scdlifestyle.com) my world has turned around and I have normal stools for the first time in years.  THESE GUYS ARE AMAZING!!  LISTEN TO THEM AND YOU WILL HEAL!!!  I now integrate your principles into my own health coaching with others in the Boston area, and people’s lives are changing!  I am getting married in 2 weeks, and I am thrilled that I know I won’t feel sick the night of the wedding!

      Ha-ha thanks Sandra, love the play on words.  Use our “4-day rule” to test removing dairy, meaning if you remove it for about 4 days that should be long enough to get it out of your system and give you a good idea of how you’ll feel without it.

    ALSO… When I watch the presentations in full-screen, I keep getting distracted by the fact that the cows at the bottom of each slide are black with white spots instead of white with black spots. Is that a ‘grass-fed’ thing? ;)

      Hi Sandra, it’s just a genetic trait.  Some cows are more white, some are more black.  My husband is a dairy farmer, I’ve spent a few years on a dairy farm with him so I learned a little bit about cattle breeding!  You can introduce more white or more black into a genetic line, some farmers prefer their cows to be more black as they tend not to get sunburn or cancers than white cows.

    When I first heard about bone broth, one of the things listed as a beneficial result of consuming bone broth is that it causes the release of hcl in the stomach.  Do you know if this is true?

      Yes, glycine, the main ingredient in gelatin, stimulates gastric acid secretion.  here’s the study: 
      25. Wald, A, Stimulation of gastric acid secretion by glycine and related oligopeptides in humans, American Journal of Physiology, 1982, 5, 242, G86-G88.

        Bone broth is full of lots of goodies. But also glutamine which helps heal the lining of the gut wall.

    Great presentation, thank you! I had UC for 3 years and was on the SCD for 2.5 years, but had to have a complete colectomy last summer anyways. With a J-pouch, I’m still having issues with gas and loose stools, so I’m definitely still working on ‘tweaking,’ although stopped being strict SCD when I had the surgery. I’m more Paleo now, because I’ll eat things like sweet potatoes and occasional white rice. Unfortunately I’ve tried everything you mentioned, and am still not making a huge amount of progress ): It’s been a while since I tried removing eggs though. I guess I’ll try that again!

      Hi Alyssa, I’m so proud of you for working hard to take control of your health.  You’ve been through a lot but you’re doing awesome!  I always go back to the four horsemen whenever people aren’t feeling as good as they should.  If you’re still stuck and not eating the four horsemen, it’s time to start getting tested for bacterial infections or parasites with a Metametrix DNA/PCR stool screen.

With the gas issues, my suspicion is some kind of SIBO/bacterial imbalance, so I’ve been trying to put emphasis on natural antifungals in my diet such as garlic and coconut oil. I’ve also been hitting the HCl pretty hard for the last couple months, as I think that’s most likely a big problem for me as well. I just made some fermented salsa to give me something other than sauerkraut, and I started taking VSL #3 double strength about a week ago, so hopefully those will do something for me!

          Sounds like you’re on the right track, nice work tweaking!  With bad SIBO cases that have bad gas/bloating, be very aware of your insoluble fiber intake, that can be a trigger as well.

            Ah sorry for posting twice! Thank you (: You know, I’ve been getting the feeling lately that I’m eating too much fiber. Greens always come through undigested. I always feel naughty when I don’t eat my vegetables though haha. Are green smoothies or pureed soups a better option? Or does the fact that the fiber is pureed not really make a difference to the bacteria?

            Pureeing can help, we usually start off the “tough cases” with that when they begin the diet.  It could be something to test, but start by eating veggies that are lower in insoluble fiber (sometimes just peeling and deseeding does the trick).  I don’t recommend juicing if you have Diarrhea, gas, or cramping because it tends to make it worse.

    What about a corn allergy?  Do you think that can be healed with your diet?

      That’s an interesting question Anitta.  Typically leaky gut is the source of food allergies like that and I think SCD/Paleo can help to heal leaky gut (along with supplements and lifestyle changes).  But I wouldn’t recommend someone going back to eating the food that made you sick in the first place.  It may help you get rid of a corn allergy over time, but going back to eating corn might bring it right back.

        Thanks, Jordan! I will never eat real corn again! Ever!
        The problem is all the hidden corn in many different forms!
        It is in everything from shampoo to toilet paper to waxes and stuff on fresh foods! It is exhausting to keep up with what I can eat and what I can’t because companies are constantly changing! And corn does not have to be declared. And supplements are almost impossible to find without corn! Arg!

    Wow – I really wish I would have heard this when I was on GAPS a year ago. It did very little for me over 6 months and it might have worked better if I had had these tips. Question about probiotics: Do you guys have any opinion about soil based probiotics (as opposed to the plant based ones that have to be refrigerated)? I have been reading that they can actually harm your gut.

      Hi Andrea – thanks for the kind words.  Never give up, even if it didn’t work before, keep tweaking and you’ll find a version of SCD/GAPS/Paleo that’s just right for you.  You brought up a great question.  I don’t yet have an opinion of soil based probiotics.  I’ve read one study on it but the jury is still out for me.  I think if we occasionally eat raw, local, and organic veggies without washing them we’re getting the same thing to some degree, but I’m not sold on taking them in pill form yet.  More research will come out over the next few years, that I know for sure.

    Thanks, this has been a useful presentation.  I’d been eating mostly healthily but suddenly I ran into this problem a couple months ago.  It was easy to pinpoint citrus as a problem (I could *see* the pulp), but apparently this dovetailed with a sudden bout of eating lots of pistachios, which I normally don’t do.  Anyhow, nuts and oranges and grapefruit are off the food plan for now.  I may well fine-tune further.  

    I’d seriously been wondering why this was happening, when most of my nutrition is quite healthy. It is good to realize that not everyone can eat the same, even when it is something overall real food.

    how do I reintroduce it? Should I just eat a lot of it on the fifth day and
    then watch for results during the following 3 days (not eating that food within
    that 3 days)?
