I believe that the slide about how much to take should say at least 1 tsp (not at least 1 tbsp) for pregnant and nursing moms! :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/kitchenkop Kelly KitchenKop

If I were pregnant or nursing, I’d be taking at LEAST 1 Tbsp a day, and more if I could get it down.  :)

  • Katalin

I eat the unflavoured one. It’s not that bad at all.

  • Wade

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I remember reading that the amount of butter that we would have to consume to get the amount of K2 that is in the butter oil is some ridiculous amount… Something like 8 times the amount of K2 in butter oil vs. pastured butter. Can anyone verify/shoot this down please? Thanks!

    • Misterworms

I asked Green Pastures about this and yes, they claim that some ridiculous amount of butter is processed to get a small amount of butter oil. But, I have not heard any convincing evidence that this butter oil “extract” is any more superior than a good quality ghee from pastured cows’ milk or heck, the whole butter itself. I’m interested in reviewing any information to that effect. What proof do they have that the vitamin content is captured in a concentrated form? And is that a good idea?

  • Annelie

Thank you! Will have to try this.

  • Goofefoot

If I start taking CLO should I stop taking my multi vitamin? It has 2500 IU of Vit.A  40% as beta cerotene. I also supplement 2000 IU of D3. Will this throw off the ‘perfect balance’?

    • Molly

Vitamins are junk basically.  I know that sounds harsh but its true.  You want to get your vitamins thru food.  But I hear a lot of experts say still supplement D3 because most of us are deficient in it even if we eat “clean”.  But most WAPF experts say vitamins are mostly a waste of money.  Try to get the bone broth, FCLO, Butter oil, D3 (sunshine) and ferments.  That is natures vitamins.

    • http://www.facebook.com/kitchenkop Kelly KitchenKop

I can’t say for sure, I’d consult a naturopath or holistic doc for help with that one.  All I can say is that these days it takes a long time for us to get through a bottle of multi-vitamins, we’re more into getting our nutrients through whole foods, as the next commenter mentions.

  • Lindyanna

I take CLO don’t mind at All. I have a glass of juice or tea ready to drink. I plug my nose, take the CLO and with my nose still plugged I drink what ever I have ready for me. I don.t taste anything, but the drink. Try it!

  • Elaine

    I
purchased the cinnamon tingle FCLO with BO at the WAPF conference last year, as
Dave said it would keep indefinitely if unopened. Hope this is true.

    In
February had a toothache from a wannabe cavity in one of my exposed roots. This
was making chewing very painful and I had to resort to favoring one side. Made
an appt with my dentist to squeeze me in ASAP, which was two days away. This
pain had come and gone for a few years and I figured I couldn’t put off the inevitable
root canal. Then remembered a testimonial about FCLO, which I had in my fridge.
Began putting about a 1/4 tsp of the paste right on that tooth. Packed it in
with my tongue morning and night. As it warms, I swallow it in tiny amounts.
Within less than a day, pain gone and I cancelled the appt. There is still some
sensitivity on occasion when I floss, but nothing bad. I don’t wince and it
never is noticeable when I eat. Now I do this once a day in the evening. Taste
is never a problem. I enjoy this little bit of “dessert.”

Isn’t that awesome?!  It’s not the first time I’ve heard stories like that.  Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Kelly,

Could you elaborate about the vit. D in cod liver oil? From
what I know it is mostly vit D2 which is actually not good for us. We need vit
D3. When I contacted the owner of the fermented cod liver oil company( David
Wetzel) he was rude about it and he did not respond to my concern. Well, with my
first email he was evasive and he beat around bush and with my second email from
me (since I do not give up) he was rude.

    Thank you for your insight.

      Hi Barbara,

That’s a good question and one I’m not clear on.  Watch my Facebook page next week (Facebook.com/KellytheKitchenKop) and I’ll ask around about this and see if we can find out more from others who may have done more specific research.

I enjoyed Kelly’s presentation but wish Shawn had asked, more specifically, “Is there any danger due to the presence of excessive mercury in the cod?”

  • Taniko Kishimoto

Great presentation!  I do have one comment and one question.  When my late mother was raised, she was forced to swallow her cod liver oil in orange juice.  Until the day she passed, she could not abide even the scent of oranges.  So I’d be loath to try to eat, or encourage children to eat, cod liver oil with a overlay of cinnamon flavor.

My question however, is, how sustainable is the cod fishery industry, from which cod liver oil is obtained?  How do we do this, getting the real product, when this past century has seen an unreasonable crash in the population of cod?  I know some turn around is happening, but is this good enough?  I am asking these questions seriously — I don’t know the answers, and hope you can shed some light here.  I know some fish can be farmed successfully and in health for themselves and the environment (arctic shad, tilapia), but does cod fall into this category?  Is wild cod making enough of a comeback?

(I have semi-recently read the book about cod by, I believe, Mark Kurlansky.)

      Hi Taniko,

Your question is addressed part-way down the page here:  http://www.greenpasture.org/public/Products/PurityStatement/index.cfm

I’ve been on the fence about fermented cod liver oil and still am. I’m pretty certain I’ll be taking it in the future but not quite yet.
I do love my butter though!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=590829859 Courtney Adams

Yes, the capsules are more expensive, and she says that you have to take more capsules to equal one spoon….other than that, am I missing out on anything by only taking the capsules?

    • http://www.facebook.com/kitchenkop Kelly KitchenKop

If you’re taking the Green Pasture FCLO capsules, you’re getting the exact same oil inside the caps as you’d get on the spoon, just not anywhere near as much.

      • Hari Hart

How many capsules equal 1 teaspoon?

  • Asdf

I take and love cod liver oil every day. The green pasture stuff is prohibitively expensive, so I get good stuff without additives, and grassfed organic butter. WAPF has a lot on the ball, but they cling to wheat. Regardless of how you process it, wheat is GMO’d, and will wreck your body. Read Wheat Belly by William Davis, and of course do more investigating on wheat & grains. Paleo rocks!

  • AR

Great! Are there other companies for fermented CLO that are more friendly with shipping costs to Canada? Green pasture and duty costs are ridiculous.. Anyone?

    • KF

There are some retailers in Canada that carry their products.  There used to be a page online at weston a price that listed international retailers but I can’t seem to find it now.  One place that I have purchased from is Family Herbal Clinic in St Albert, Alberta.  They have a website with more info.

      • Barbara

Contact these people http://www.shop.gapsdiet.com/category.sc;jsessionid=5312B0077CE069C4F94C662BCC291020.qscstrfrnt06?categoryId=13  They charge $8 flat fee no matter how many bottles
you purchase. They are in the USA.
Everyone else in Canada (including the Alberta place) charges way too much. I really hate it that everything in Canada is so much more expensive than in the USA. I am not even talking few percent but multiples or at least twice as expensive. Sorry, here is my little rant. You Americans have it so good.

        • AR

Thank you for input! Yes  the costs of shipping and duty are just hefty, especially when making a large order for my clinic. Thanks I will try those contact!
